Evaluation question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Our brief was that we had to make a British comic book film aimed at a female audience. Considering this we had to look into what British distribution companies there was. We did some research and then created a shortlist of options which included: momentum pictures, twentieth century fox, M-G-M and paramount pictures UK.

Evaluation question 3

Out of these we then began to consider what type of films they tended to distribute. From this we discovered that M-G-M, paramount and twentieth century fox tended to distribute big blockbuster movies from big institutions whereas Momentum pictures did more British films, and many from independent film companies. Films such as The King’s speech, the girl with the dragon tattoo and The woman in black helped us decide to use it momentum pictures as they are the best company to use as an independent film company.

Our title card

This is the title card for our production company( supernova) and the distrubution company(momentum pictures):

We are very happy with the way it went, as it fits with the conventions of this genre. I particularly like the end when the drum beat matches the flashing of the name of our distrubution company.

Elements film opening post production

Throughout the last few weeks we have been working together to create our final edit of our film opening. We are now very close to finishing what has been one of the hardest parts of the production. Here are some of our screen shots of the editing taking place:

Here we have a screen shot of the opening shot of the opening.
In the shot we have included the title of our distribution company.

Here we see the scene use a guasain blur to introduce the charcter
that effie is playing. here we feature the production company title.

In this shot we have cut the shot to show it like a cartoon, so we
can then show the title of the actress.

This part was one of the hardest parts to complete, as we have
no budget at all so we couldnt afford to make it properly, here
the flower is slowly dying as the character walks past angrily.

Here we see the shot fade out into the final title of the name of
the film. This shot may be taken out anyway as it does not work
that well really.

Feedback from our class for first draft

The negative feedback we received will now help us to improve the film. From the feedback we now know we need to:

  • level out the audio
  • sort out the establishing shot and make it less shaky
  • make the fire effect better and more realistic
  • speed up the film, make it less boring
  • use the music in different ways to make it more interesting
The positive feedback we received included:

  • there is a good rangew of shots
  • the storyline is clear, helped by the institutions and narrative
  • the titles are good and clear
This helps us now improve the opening and we are now encouraged by knowing others like it.

Elements creating and editing

Today we have completed our first draft of our film, Here it is;

The music created was made in GarageBand, as we had to make our own music to avoid any copyright problems. It was made without the use of the film so we did not know how it would sound in time with the action of the film. Pete created the fire coming from jess's hand by filming it in his garden. It does not look the best yet but we will probably improve it by using after effects. We have hopefully managed to successfully make it look like allk of it was filmed on the same day, even though it was on two different days with very different lighting.

Filming of our Opening

Whilst we were filming the opening, I was taking photos of behind the scene and the location.
Here we were filming in the park, this is where the majority of our filming was done. We were lucky on the day because the weather was nice, so we did not have to adjust to that.
We started filming in the arcade in bournemouth, this is where the character autumn is introduced into the scene, the music in the backround of this scene was a slight problem, as there was some people playing music outside.

Here our cameraman joe is filming a close up of 'autumn' taking her phone from her pocket, this is transitioned with two other shots to create make this shot the best it can be.
Here I filmed an over the shoulder shot of Joe filming effie, with director pete looking over the filming to check it is all correct.

Here director pete and cameraman joe are discussing how to film the next shot in the scene. we are now back in the park, preparing to film the next stage of effie's character.

Joe is now filming from the bridge, to show effie walking towards their meeting point. We then go on to film a reverse shot where effie walks past the camera.

Director pete is now taking a break from the directing and pulling a stupid face at the camera, whilst joe and zoe continue to work on the filming of the opening.

Cameraman joe had to go to extreme lengths filming this, here he is lying on the ground to get a good shot of effies feet as she walks up to the meeting place.

Here joe is filming an establishing shot of bournemouth, to show where the opening is filmed, we did not use this for very long, as the camera was too shaky and looked rubbish.

Here is the start of the second day of our filming, when we film jess' part, here we are at bournemouth beach, where jess started and walks throught he park later on

Here director pete is getting his hands and knees dirty filming a low shot of jess walking through the park, therefore needing to get very low to the ground.

Our first shoot for elements

Recently we began filming for our film opening. Generally it was a good efficient day of filming, and there was very few real problems, considering we were filming in the centre of bournemouth. We did have to change things at times as where we intended to film, there was a busker playing outside the cafe we were going to shoot at, and so the sound quality would be poor. So we tweaked it slightly so the charactersd met on a bridge in bournemouth gardens, which was slightly quieter.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our next filming day, as the weather was not good to us. The first day we filmed it was quite sunny, but when we came to film again, it was raining quite heavily and therefore ruined the continuity of our film opening.

Hopefully we can rearrange to film shortly.

questionnaire for elements

Classification of our film

We think our film will be rated '12' by the BBFC as there is moderate violence that would class it as a 12.

Here are some of the reasons BBFC use to class there films:

Discrimination

Discriminatory language or behaviour must not be endorsed by the work as a whole. Aggressive discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly condemned.
Drugs
Any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or give instructional detail.

Horror

Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained.

Imitable behaviour

Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied, or appear pain or harm free. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language

Moderate language is allowed. The use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’) must be infrequent.

Nudity

Nudity is allowed, but in a sexual context must be brief and discreet.

Sex

Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers. Frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable.

Theme

Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers.

Violence

Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated, and must have a strong contextual justification.

Other films that are in our genre:
Iron Man 12
Spiderman 2+3 12
Batman 12
Hulk 12

Institution of our film

Momentum Pictures-White&Blue 2007 cropped.jpgWe have now decided on the distribution company that we would use to distribute the film, and we have decided to use Momentum Pictures. The reasoning for this is because it is a british distributor that has distibuted many good british films such as The Kings Speech. It won 8 BAFTAs in February 2011, seven for the kings speech and one for The girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In the past they have won OSCARs, BAFTAs and BIFAs. This will be perfect for our film as it is meant to be a British mainstream film so this company will be good for this.
